2/1/07 - Day 6
Today we didn't get up to much - highlights were a visit to St Paul's Cathedral (£9.00 entry each!), where we climbed dozens of steps to reach the Whispering Gallery in the dome, which also gave a spectacular view of the cathedral interior. A bit gaudy for my liking though. Evensong at the Abbey, after which Neil had kidly arranged for Heather Boyd and I to meet Ashley Grote (organ scholar at the Abbey, sometime organ scholar Kings College Cambridge), for a little tour of the organ.
Console of the Abbey organ. Such a huge instrument!
North Case
Ashley demonstrated the different divisions, plus some interesting solo stops, then Heather had a play through the Final from Vierne's Symphonie No. 1, with Ashley running around changing stops and couplers for her. It sounded magnificent!
Friends of mine, Mary Peckham and David Gammie kindly invited us to dine with them at David's house in Wimbledon, and after a delicious meal and many bottles of French and Italian red, it was time to head home. We caught the last tube from Wimbledon, but unfortunately it only ran part of the way home, so we disembarked, flagged a taxi, and were home in bed by 1.30am!
