9/1/07 - Day 13

I met Sue, Huw and Helen Sherman in the hotel lobby, and set off to find breakfast down 7th Avenue. Bagel Maven was decided upon, and we had wonderful table service from a lovely and most amusing black woman named Carolyn. She was most amused to find that in Australia we call "jelly", "jam". We found her linguistic nuances so delightful - a real American black lady was waiting on our table! We set off downtown, in search of a discount clothing store we'd been told about by the name of Century 21, and then we saw it. Ground Zero. Its amazing to think that two buildings that big - the size of a city block each, so many stories high, came crashing down on this very spot. All the dust and debris - some 5 and a bit years ago. It all seems so far away, yet so close. There are still people coming to pay their respects. Putting up roses on the mesh fencing. In the newspapers they report they're still finding body parts in the rubble. It is like some kind of bizarre archeological dig. Now they have a selection of photographic art on display, to do both with the plans for the site and also the day the world stood still.

Century 21 proved to be a dangerous place to visit; not for me, but for Helen. She was so excited by all the shoes and boots they had for sale! Whilst she was trying on one particular pair, she managed to get her foot stuck in the boot for about 5 minutes - we'd all wondered off to find something else to look at, of course - she was getting quite panicked by the thought of possibly having to be cut from her footwear, and having to pay for them, and ending up with nothing but scraps of leather to show for her $200!

We wondered around Downtown for a bit, then returned to the hotel for a little rest. Such a busy day! And it wasn't over yet - Philip French had kindly organised tickets to go and see Rent for himself, Rajah, Sue Southgate, Helen Sherman and I. My first Broadway show! Sue, Helen and I had dinner at this weird steak place just near the hotel beforehand. The show was stunning, although they, for some reason, cut 4 or so scenes from it. At interval, I asked Sue if she was enjoying it - she wasn't. I did actually think that it might not "be for her", just as we sat down in the theatre. By the end of it though, we all were of the opinion that it was very good!
